Don't Be Fooled By Latest Egg Bill

ATTENTION ANIMAL ACTIVISTS: the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS), the ASPCA, Farm Sanctuary and Mercy for Animals continue to push for the passage of a bill (Egg Products Inspection Act: H.R. 3798 and S. 3239) that has been written in agreement with the UEP (United Egg Producers). These animal welfare groups say this bill will improve the living conditions for egg-laying hens, but what this bill will really do is prolong the suffering and deaths of millions of hens while keeping the egg industry alive and well.

This shameful deal brokered with the UEP will—among other things—keep hens locked up in cages and will create a “humane” labeling system that will continue to make people feel deceptively better about consuming eggs.

I was shocked and appalled by a recent email I received from a HSUS representative asking me to request my senators' support for this legislation. Her form letter said it all: “This legislation seeks to provide a stable future for egg farmers . . .”

It is no surprise that this bill is endorsed by the UEP, which represents 90 percent of all U.S. egg production, as it will keep their industry (and systematic animal abuse) active and functional for years to come. Moreover, if passed, the new federal law will make it harder—if not impossible—for states to enact real anti-cruelty legislation, which is exactly why the UEP is in favor of this bill.

Please urge your senators and congressman not to support this bill. For more information or to contact your legislators, please visit

And remember, the best way to help hens is to stop the demand for their unfertilized ovum by refusing to buy or eat eggs.
